There are various roles for every hero to play. Some heroes have great ergonomics when looking at their skills as each may benefit one or the other. A large portion of Dota’s success could be said is based on the great combination use between each characters’ skills. A large emphasis on these skills are placed when either balancing a hero or just plain judging its usefulness. Every hero has 3 basic abilities with the 4th being an “ultimate” skill available only after gaining certain levels in game. Other information such as game time or gold is located at the top bar along with menu buttons.Įvery hero available to the player has 4 abilities, based on the same hero system available in-game Warcraft 3 skirmishes. Mobility is the same as Warcraft 3 with a point and right click at a location to either move or to a unit to attack. As seen on the picture above, the minimap is located on the bottom left of the screen, character information on the bottom middle, item info to the right of that, and skills and selectable interfaces to the bottom right. The overlooking bird’s eye view is suitable to make greater strategic decisions when coordinating self attacks or group coordination.
Another reason that there is no change to the interface may be simply to retain the Warcraft 3 feel. The game interface takes on the UI used by Warcraft 3, as the map editor does not enable the programmer to change the actual look of the interface the player uses. Matches are usually 5 vs 5 and may last from around 30mins earliest to even as late as 80mins.
There are a total of 104 heroes to this date available for players to choose from, along with a couple more to select from in special game modes. The characters, or heroes, available for the player to choose are not limited by the side they choose.
Each team’s target is to defeat the other by taking down enemy buildings and finally destroying the enemy “throne” (Sentinel “World Tree” and Scourge “Frozen Throne”). How the game works is that there are two opposing forces, the Sentinel and the Scourge (simple good vs bad scenario).

Alongside tower defences and other various custom games, Dota stands out amongst its other Warcraft 3 generated custom maps. First of all, moba stands for multi online battle arena, and rts stands for real-time strategy. Developed by a group of programmers with IceFrog spearheading the production, DotA, or Defence of the Ancients as the abbreviation stands for, is a moba rts mod from the Warcraft 3 map editor engine.
